Staffordshire 'Diana Vernon' figure

Victorian, circa 1860. 12.4ins high, 6.5ins wide, 4.7ins depth.

Staffordshire figure with a theatrical and literary theme which features Diana Vernon, stood on a shaped base.



Multi-coloured version. Dull gilt base line and embellishment. Decorated 'in the round' - decoration to front and reverse. Vent hole to the reverse.





This piece represents Diana Vernon who is a character from the novel 'Rob Roy' written by Sir Walter Scott in 1817. Book reference,'Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875' Book 1, by A.& N. Harding, page 284, figure 1039/1040.

Condition

Good. Some rubbing to gilt.





Slight wear to the reverse.



KILN EFFECTS: shrinkage crack to the right side of her waist;



piece of kiln detritus caught inside causing piece to rattle; a speck of stray coloured glaze to the right side of her jacket.



RESTORATION: Right side of hat reglued and join retouched.



Handle of riding crop remodelled.



Retouched paint losses to the black detailing on her skirt, her green sash and hair.
