Pair Staffordshire cow with calf spill vases

Victorian, circa 1880. Tallest is 11ins high, 8.3ins wide, 4.3ins depth. Pair of Staffordshire spill vases with a pastoral theme which feature cow with her calf beside a stream,
stood on an oval base. Multi-coloured version.



Bright gilt base line and embellishment. Flatback, decorated only to the front.

Condition

CONDITION: Right facing: Good.

Flake to lower base edge at front.



Some rubbing to gilt.



Wear to cow's tail.



KILN EFFECTS: shrinkage crack to underside;



staining to craze lines to reverse;





flecks of stray coloured glaze to cow's legs.





RESTORATION: stabilised and retouched shrinkage lines to spill at reverse and base front;





filled chips to cow's right ear and left horn;



retouched paint losses to ground and spill;





stabilised and retouched hairline to cow's hind right ankle.





Left facing: Good.

Gilt almost entirely rubbed away.



KILN EFFECTS: a few shrinkage cracks to cow's body and to calf's shoulder;








kiln detritus caught in the glaze to cow's body and ground;





flecks of stray coloured glaze to cow's legs.



RESTORATION: cow's left horn reglued and join retouched;





retouched paint losses to cow's neck.
