Staffordshire Lord Byron & Maid of Athens figure

Victorian, circa 1860. 8.7ins high, 7.1ins wide, 2.8ins depth.

Staffordshire figure with a theatrical and literary theme which features Lord Byron and the Maid of Athens holding hands, stood on a rectangular base.



Multi-coloured version. Dull gilt base line and embellishment.





Decorated mainly to the front.



Vent hole to the underside.



This piece represents the poem 'Maid of Athens, ere we part' by Lord Byron, written in 1810 and dedicated to a young girl of Athens.

Condition

Good. No restoration. Small chips to base.





Some small flakes and wear to her sleeves,



headdress,





skirt, hands,







face,



his jacket, nose and hands.







Slight rubbing to gilt.





KILN EFFECTS: shrinkage cracks to the ground near their feet;





firing hole to his right shoulder;



notable crazing.
