French Demonstration Sampler by SJ

Circa 1900. 67.25ins by 13.5ins wide. French demonstration sampler. Unframed.

Stitched to a silk backing.

The sampler is worked in wool, fine wool, cotton and silk on canvas, cotton and netting grounds, in a variety of stitches.

Colours greens, red, white, pink, orange, brown and blues. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 0-9.

Inscription reads

'Toué soit Jésus-Christ>1899 4E COURS 1900.' (Translates to 'Honour Jesus Christ. Class 4. 1899-1900').

One panel has the initials 'SJ'.

Demonstrates examples of needlework including cross stitch,

button holes, a button, hooks,

patches,

embroidery,

knitting,

darning,

lace making

and crocheting.

CONDITION: Good. Two small holes.

A number of pale patchy stains.

Very minor stitch loss to the button section's frill edging,

the pale blue dividler line section,

and the orange darning section.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run.
