1852 Sampler by Margaret Jenkison

Victorian, dated 1852. 14.75ins by 12.25ins wide. 1852 Sampler by Margaret Jenkison. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass.

Tacked to a wood stretcher frame with wood and brown paper backing.

The sampler is worked in a silk-like thread on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye.

Meandering floral border.

Colours greens, cream, browns, gold and blue. Alphabets A-V in upper case.

Verse reads

'God is a Spirit and they that worship him must worship him

in spirit and in truth. John IV. Ver. 24 G.H.S. H.S.Y.'

Signed and dated

'Margaret Jenkison. 1852.'

A good set of motifs, including fruit trees,

flowers,

potted flowering plants,

rabbits,

fruit baskets,

fir trees,

crowns,

birds

and dogs.

CONDITION: Generally Good. No holes.

Some pale patchy staining and a few pale stain specks.

No stitch losses.

A couple of loose threads.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.

No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
