1822 'Halstead Church' School Sampler. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass.
Fixed to wood and brown paper backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering strawberry border.
Colours blue, cream, dark brown, gold, pink, greens and black.
Verse reads
'When to the house of God we go
To hear his word and sing his Love
We ought to worship him below
As saints and angels do above'.
Dated 'This Sampler Was Work'd At Mrs Pasks School Halsted Essex In The Year 1822'.
The signature is not legible anymore.
A good set of motifs, some finely detailed, including a church motif entitled 'A north easr view of Halstead Church Essex',
stars, flowers, potted flowering plants,
stags, squirrels, a second church,
a house, owls, insects and peacocks.
CONDITION: Good. A few small holes.
No stains other than uniform age darkening of the ground.
Stitch losses to the signature and motifs.
Colours are slightly faded but still well defined. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
