Framed in an old, gilded, gesso frame with glass.
Glued to chipboard backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Meandering strawberry border.
Colours pale blue, green, dark brown, gold, white, black, yellow and pink.
Verse entitled
'The blood of Jesus'
reads
'My various powers awake
To sound redeeming grace
To him that washed us in his blood
Ascribe eternal praise'.
Signed and dated
'Eliza Cookson marked this in the 13 year of her age 1824'.
A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk,
birds,
a house,
angels,
flowers,
potted flowering plants,
hearts,
thistles,
a shepherd and shepherdess with sheep,
dogs
and butterflies
CONDITION: Good.
A few holes.
No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground.
No stitch losses.
Colours are slightly faded but still well defined.
No colour run.
Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
