George III, dated 1794. 21.5ins by 19.5ins wide. 1794 England & Wales Map Sampler by Sarah Smyth. Framed in an old, gilt over wood, frame with glass.

Stitched to board with chipboard and brown paper backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering floral border and a plain dotted border that was added later.

Colours grey, cream, red, light brown, gold, silver, pink, blues and greens.

Signed and dated

'A MAP OF ENGLAND AND WALES BY SARAH SMYTH AGED 11 YEARS 1794'.

Depicts a map of England and Wales, complete with some surrounding seas, countries and a compass.

CONDITION: Good.

A few small holes.

A few pale stains.

No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.

A few loose threads.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.

The silks bright and glossy. No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
