1817 Silkwork Sampler by Catharine Julian Harby

George III, dated 1817. 17ins by 13ins wide. 1817 Sampler by Catharine Julian Harby. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass.

Tacked to wood with brown paper backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering floral border.

Colours greens, yellow, pale blue, light brown, white, pink, black and grey.

Verse reads

'In thy garden Lord below

Water me that I may grow

When that all thy grace is given

Than transplant me into Heaven'.

Signed and dated 'Catharine Julian Harby 1817 Aged 11 years'.

A wonderful set of motifs, including stags, a variety of birds, flowers, trees, laden with fruit, fruit baskets, fir trees, blossoming trees, hearts, potted flowering plants and diamond shapes.

CONDITION: Generally Good. A few small holes to the extreme edges only.

Some dark patchy staining around the border.

No stitch losses. Colours are slightly faded but still well defined. No colour run. Stretching is very slightly uneven.

Frame showing slight wear and is weak in one of the corners, but in our opinion still sturdy enough to hang.
