
Victorian, dated 1840. 13ins by 15.75ins wide. 1840 Silkwork Sampler by Ann Smart.
Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering strawberry border.
Colours greens, browns and gold. Alphabets A-Z in upper case.
Verse reads
'Remember now thy Creator in the days
of thy youth, while the evil days come
not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou
shalt say. I have no pleasure in them.'
Signed and dated 'Ann Smart 1840'.
A good set of motifs, including dogs,
a star,
birds, potted flowering plants,
trees, laden with fruit,
fruit baskets,
fir trees, butterflies
and apples.
CONDITION: Generally good. A few small holes and some loss of ground to the top and bottom edges. The sampler has been glued to the backing with conservators glue, to the very top and bottom edges only.
A few patchy stains.
Very minor stitch loss to letters of the alphabet.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Stretching is very slightly uneven.
Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
