George III, dated 1772. 16.5ins high by 12.25ins wide. 1772 Ten Commandments Sampler by Sarah Elsam. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk and cotton on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

No border, divider lines in various patterns.

Colours browns, green, gold, black, blues and cream.

Alphabets A-Z in upper case

Verse entitled

'The ten Commandts EXO the Xxthy'

reads

'thou fhalt have no more Gods but me

Before no Idol bow thy knee

Take not the Name of God in vain

Nor date the sabbath Day profane

Give both thy parents Honour due

Take heed that thou no Murder do

Abftain from Words and Deeds unclean

Nor fleal tho thou artpoor and mean

Nor make a Wifful Lye nor Love it

What is thy Neighbours dare not covet'

and

'O Lord Direct my feet to tread

The paths of virtue and truth

Let not my Heart to Pride be let

But seek for wifdom my Youth'

and

'If I am Doom'd the marriage chains to Wear

Kind Heavens Propitious be this my prayer

That he whom I am suted obey

May Kindly Govern with a Gentle away'

'May his Good sece improve my beft of thought

and his Good Nature smile on all my faults

Be this my fate If I am made a wife

or Ever make me Happy in a single life'.

'Sarah Elsam is my name And in my Youth I work'd ye same And by this work you May fee what care my Parents Took of me Feb 21ft my Year of our Lord 1772'.

A good set of motifs, including flowers,

birds,

hearts,

crowns and diamonds

CONDITION: Good.

A few holes.

 

No stains other than uniform age darkening of the ground.

Some stitch losses to motifs

and border below signature.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.

No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
