1835 Stag Sampler by Sarah Berry. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.
Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.
The sampler is worked in wool on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Meandering floral border.
Colours red, green, pink, purple, orange, brown and blue.
Verse reads
'Next unto God dear Parents I address
Myfelf to you in humble thankfulness
For all your care and charge on me bestow'd
The means of learning unto me allowd
Go on I pray and let me still pursue
Those golden arts the friendless never knew'.
Signed and dated 'Sarah Berrys Work done in the 13 year of her age. 1835.'
A good set of motifs, including deer, potted flowering plants,
trees, laden with fruit, stags, crowns, peacocks and fir trees.
CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of holes.
One patchy stain and a few stain specks.
Some stitch losses to the border and motifs.
Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.
Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
