Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and rippled, old glass.
Tacked to wood with brown paper backing.
The sampler is worked in silk and cotton on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering floral border.
Colours greens, pale blue, light brown, black and creams. Verse reads
'Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand,
As the first effort of a females hand:
And while her fingers oe'r this canvas move
Engage her tender heart to seek thy love,
With thy dear children let her share a part
And write thy name thyself upon her heart.'.
Signed and dated 'Caroline Wightman's Work Aged 12 1833'.
A scattering of motifs, including flowers and a potted flowering plant.
CONDITION: Generally good. A couple of holes.
A number of patchy stains and stain specks.
Stitch losses to the border.
Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. Very slight colour run around the pale blue threads.
Unevenly stretched.
Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
