1793 Map Sampler by Mary Ann Watkiss

George III, dated 1793. 20.5ins high by 18ins wide. 1793 Map Sampler by Mary Ann Watkiss. Framed in a restored old oval wooden frame, with rippled, old glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering floral border.

Colours greens, pale blue, light brown, copper, white, pink, gold and black.

Depicts a map of England and Wales with the counties, and surrounding seas.

Signed and dated

'Mary Ann Watkiss 1793'.

CONDITION: Generally Good.

A number of holes.

A few patchy stains and uniform age darkening to the ground.

There is what looks like pen or pencil marks around 'Anglesea' and 'Mortgomery'.

Stitch losses to the floral border,

compass,

signature

and place names.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.

No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung 'as is'.
