1836 Sampler by Mary Ann Eagle

William IV, dated 1836. 15ins by 12.25ins wide. 1836 Sampler by Mary Ann Eagle. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass.

Fixed to a wood stretcher frame with brown paper backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye.

Meandering floral border.

Colours greens, red, pale blue, light brown, white, pink, black and pale yellow.

Alphabets A-Z in upper case.


Verse reads

'Jesus permit thy gracious Name to stand

As the first efforts of an infant's hand.

And while her fingers on the canvas move.

Engage her tender heart to seek thy love.

With thy dear children let her have a part.

And write thy Name thyself upon her heart.

and

Verse entitled 'On Happiness' reads


'Plant of celestial seed if dropt below.

Say in what mortal soil thou deignst to grow.

Fair op'ning to some courts propitious shine.

Or deep with diamonds in the flaming mine.'


Signed and dated 'Mary Ann Eagle. Finished This Sampler. In the 8th. Year of her age. 1836'.

A scattering of motifs, including birds,

stars, potted flowering plants and fruit baskets.

CONDITION: Good.

A number of small holes.

A few patchy stains and some uniform age darkening of the ground.

Stitch losses to the border,

divider lines,

motifs

and letters.

A few stray white threads caught behind the glass.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

Very slight colour run around the black threads.

Stretching is very slightly uneven.

Frame showing slight wear,

otherwise sound.
