1836 Tiger Sampler by Elizabeth Smith

William IV, dated 1836. 17.25ins by 16.5ins wide.

1836 Sampler by Elizabeth Smith. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Stitched to linen with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in fine wool and cotton on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering floral border.

Colours greens, pale blue, browns, white, pink, orange, beige and black.

Verse reads
'Befet with fnares on every hand,

In life's uncertain path I stand;

Saviour divine .diffuse thy light,

To guide my doubtful footsteps right.

Engage this roving treacherous heart

O Lord, to choose the better part,

To scorn the trifles of a day

For joys that none can take away.'

Signed and dated 'ELIZABETH SMITH A.D 1836'.

A scattering of motifs, including a tiger walking amongst grasses,

flowers, potted flowering plants,

a winged insect and a bird.

CONDITION: Generally Good. A few holes.

One dark patchy stain in the bottom left corner and a pale stain to top left corner.

Stitch losses to the border, the date, and motifs.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run.

Unevenly stretched.

Frame showing wear and chips, but structurally sound.
