William IV, dated 1831. 7.5ins high by 11.5ins wide. 1831 Motif Sampler by E H. Framed in an old, possibly original wood frame with glass.
Tacked and stitched to linen with paper backing.
The sampler is worked in cotton and fine wool on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Meandering floral border.
Colours red, cream, pale blue, dark brown, green and purple. Signed with initials and dated 'EH work 1831'.
A good set of motifs, including stags,
potted flowering plants,
birds
and peacocks.
CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of holes to the right and bottom edge, some of these have rust marks to them and there are also rust marks to the left edge.
A few patchy stains.
Stitch losses to the signature.
Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. We think that the threads to the stags, peacocks and smaller birds have been retouched.
No colour run. Unevenly stretched.
Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung 'as is'.
