1799 Lord's Prayer Sampler by Sarah Norris

George III, dated 1799. 15.5ins by 11.5ins wide.

1799 Lord's Prayer Sampler by Sarah Norris. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

No border. Colours gold, cream, red, copper, black, pink, blues and greens.

Reads

'THE LORDS PRAYER'

Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name,

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in

heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our

trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us; And

lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine

is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever

Amen'

And

'Father of light and life Thou Good Supreme

Oh teach me what is good, teach me Thyself

Save me from folly, vanity, and vice.

From every low pursuit; and feed my soul

With knowledge conscious peace and virtue pure

A scattering of finely worked floral motifs, one of which features two peacock feathers.

CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of holes, and losses mainly to the edge of the linen.

A number of small stains to old tack holes at the bottom of the sampler.

Uniform age darkening of backing canvas.

Some stitch losses to the motifs, the prayer and the verse.

Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run.

Stretching is very slightly uneven.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
