George III, dated 1817. 20ins by 20.5ins wide. 1817 Sampler by Elizabeth Sarah Cann. Framed in a modern maple frame with non-reflective glass.
Fixed to chipboard backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering floral border.
Colours gold, cream, green, copper, white, black, pink, purple, light green, blues and browns.
Verse reads
'Short is the date and narrow is the span
Which bounds the little life of foolish man
Gay scenes of blifs the ravish'd souls surprise
Raise his vain hopes and glitter in his eyes
Of swelling titles he supinely dreams
Vast are his projects and refin'd his schemes
But when big morning views of joys are past
The melancholy ev'ning comes at last
The tyrant Death a hasty summons sends
And all his momentary glory ends'.
Signed and dated
'Elizabeth Sarah Cann 1817'.
A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a large basket of flowers,
birds,
flowers,
potted flowering plants,
fruit baskets,
crowns,
fir trees
and insects.
CONDITION: Good.
A few small holes.
Fraying around the extreme edges.
One patchy stain.
Minor stitch losses to the verse,
signature
and motifs.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.
The silks bright and glossy. No colour run.
Unevenly stretched.
Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung 'as is'.
