1797 Sampler by Ann Marshal

George III, dated 1797. 17.5ins high by 11.5ins wide.

1797 Sampler by Ann Marshal. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk and fine wool on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Divider lines in various patterns.

Colours pink, cream, yellow, green, pale blue, gold, white, black and red. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case, numbers 1-18, and family initials.

Signed and dated 'Ann Marshal Aged 13 years my sampler was sewed in the year 1797'.

A good set of motifs, including two figures with their dogs, birds,

flowers, potted flowering plants,

fruit basket, crowns,

a peacock, hearts and cockerels.

CONDITION: Good. A few small holes to the outer edge where the sampler was originally tacked to a wood stretcher frame.

Some of the tack holes have staining from rust.

Some stitch losses to the divider lines, motifs,

family initials and numbers.

Colours are slightly faded but still well defined. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
