
George III, dated 1765. 13ins by 12ins wide. 1765 Silkwork Sampler Mary Coxon. Framed in a modern wood frame with non-reflective glass.
Loose mounted over card with card backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
No border, divider lines in various patterns. Colours gold, cream, green, silver, blue and pink. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-5.
Inscription reads
'If You Would Conquer This Rare Art
Your Working Mind Must Lazynes Subert'.
Verse reads
' A Man That Doth on Riches Set His Mind strives To Take Hold on
shadows And he Wind With Food And Raiment Then Contented Be
Ask Not For Riches Nor For Poverty'.
Signed and dated ' Mary Coxon Finished This Peice Of Work In The Ninth Year Of Her Age July 18 1765'.
A scattering of motifs, including potted flowering plants,
berries
and butterflies.
CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of small holes.
No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground.
No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Unevenly stretched.
Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
