1687 Verse Sampler by ??? Robinson

Queen Anne, dated 1687. 20.5ins by 12.25ins wide. 1687 Verse Sampler by ??? Robinson.

Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with acid free card with wood and brown paper backing.

The sampler is worked in fine silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye.

No border, divider lines in various patterns. Colours green, blue, red, orange, black and cream. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-9.

Verses read

'Commit not sin but fear the living lord.

Ligh yea within thee is his holy word

If amiable thou strve to bee

and that the Enemie of thy soul should flee

T??? To the lord and hee will on thee place

line illegible

If riches thou desires the lord is rich.

And will bestow on thee those graces which

Do farr exeed all momentary treasure.

And fill thy soul with inward joy & pleasure.

Which being entertaind thy soul shall sing

Sweet hallelujas unto Christ our King'

A good set of motifs, some finely detailed, including birds, two women, foliate bands, insects, an acorn and flowers.

CONDITION: Generally good. No holes. A number of patchy stains.

Stitch losses to the divider lines, the signature, motifs and letters/numbers.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. Pale colours difficult to read. No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
