
Victorian, dated 1841. 13.5ins by 11.5ins wide. 1841 Sampler by Elizabeth Mary Grattan.
Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.
Fixed to linen with wood and brown paper backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Floral border.
Colours brown, cream, green, copper, black, pink and white. Verse reads
'Ah Jesus is mine I'm now prepard
To meet with what I thought most hard
Yes let the winds of trouble blow
And comforts melt away like snow
No blasted trees or failing crops
Can hinder my eternal hopes
Tho creatures change the Lord's the same
Then let us triumph in his name..'
Signed and dated 'Elizabeth Mary Grattan 1841'.
A good set of motifs, including potted flowering plants, flowers,
birds and fruit baskets.
CONDITION: Good. A few small holes to the border.
Some dark staining to the top part of the sampler.
A dark stain speck next to the verse.
No stitch losses, one loose thread.
Colours are slightly faded but still well defined. No colour run.
Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
