
Victorian, dated 1840. 14.5ins by 12.5ins wide. 1840 Sampler by Mary Ann Naylor. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass.
Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Meandering strawberry border.
Colours greens, cream, browns and gold.
Verse reads
'Behold I stand at the door and knock
If any man hear my voice and open
the door I will come in to him and
Will sup with him and he with me
Is he a door I'll enter in
Behold the pastures large and green
A paradise divinely fair
none but the sheep have freedom there'.
Signed and dated 'Mary Ann Naylor Aged 6 Years AD 1840'.
A good set of motifs, including a house with a garden,
birds, fruit baskets and potted flowering plants.
CONDITION: Generally Good.
Two holes and slight losses to the extreme edges.
A few pale patchy stains.
Some stitch losses to the border,
divider lines,
verse
and motifs.
Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading.
No colour run.
Stretching is very slightly uneven.
Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
