1858 Castle Sampler by C Mapley

Victorian, dated 1858. 13ins by 12.5ins wide. 1858 Castle Sampler by C Mapley. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering leafy border.

Colours greens, gold and browns.

Verse reads 'GUIDE of my youth to thee cry>Great God to me be ever nigh

Lighten my eyes my heart convert

not let me thy good ways desert'.

Signed and dated ' C Mapley Newport Pagnel 1858'. Newport Pagnell is a town in Buckinghamshire, England.

A good set of motifs, including a castle or gatehouse,

dogs, potted flowering plants, stags,

fruit baskets, birds, trees and flowers.

CONDITION: Generally Good.

A number of holes.

A few patchy stains.

No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.

No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
