1830 Woolwork Sampler by Jane Auld

George IV, dated 1830. 16ins by 11.75ins wide. 1830 Sampler by Jane Auld. Framed in a modern gilded gesso frame with glass.

Fixed to board with wood and brown paper backing.

The sampler is worked in wool on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout.

No border, divider lines in various patterns. Colours pink, green and cream. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-10.

Verse entitled 'REMEMBER THY CREATER' reads

'teach me the measure of my days

thou maker of my frame

I would survey life narrow space

And learn how frail I am

o may the grave become to me

The bed of peaceful rest

Whence I shall gladly rise at length

And mingle With the blest'.

Signed and dated 'Jane. Auld Wrought. This sampler. In. The year. A.D. 1830.

A few motifs including stags,

a boat,

lions,

fruit baskets,

birds

and potted flowering plants.

CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of holes.

A couple of stain specks.

Stains to old tack holes.

Slight age darkening of the ground.

Stitch losses to letters of the alphabets,

numbers,

verse,

motifs

and signature.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. Very slight colour run around the dark green threads.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
