
George III, dated 1805. 16.5ins by 13ins wide. 1805 Hunting Scene Sampler by Martha Chesters. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.
Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering floral border.
Colours greens, pale blue, black, gold and browns.
Verse entitled 'Next unto God' reads
'Dear Parents I addrefs
Myself to you with Humble Thankfullnefs
For all your care and charge on me Beftowd
The means of Learning unto me Allowed
Go on I Pray and let me Still Pursue
The Golden arts the Vulgar never knew'.
Inscription reads 'God Save the King'.
Signed and dated 'Martha Chesters her Work Finish'd in the Year 1805'.
A few motifs including birds, sheep, flowers, bows, a butterfly, fir trees
and a man with a sword on horseback in pursuit of a stag.
CONDITION: Good.
A few holes.
No stains other than slight age darkening of the ground.
No stitch losses.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.
Slight colour run around the green threads.
Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
