1821 Adam and Eve Sampler by Mary Turner

George IV, dated 1821. 19.5ins by 18ins wide. 1821 Sampler by Mary Turner.

Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye.

Floral border.

Colours brown, green, copper, gold, blue and cream. Alphabets A-Z in upper case.

Verse reads

'Thou Lord on whom I still depend, Shall keep me faithful to the end. I Trust thy truth and love and power>

Shall save me till my latest hour, And when I lay this body down, Reward with an immortal crown>

May Heaven to the its choicest gifts impart, May every virtue animate thy hart>

May inocence protect thy tender youth, With modesty sincerity and truth>

This worlds A city full of crooked streets, Death is the market place where all must meet>

If life was merchandise as men could buy, The rich would live and poor must always die'.

Signed and dated 'MARY TURNER HER WORK FINIS IN 1821'.

A good set of motifs, some finely detailed, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk, stars,

birds, flowers, potted flowering plants, stags,

fruit baskets, lions wearing crowns, angels and butterflies.

CONDITION: Generally Good.

A few small holes.

A few patchy stains to the border.

Stitch losses to the verse

and motifs.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

Slight colour run around the green threads.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
