
Victorian, dated Nov 20 1843. 18ins by 13.75ins wide. 1843 Christ Church National School Sampler by Sarah Bryan.
Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.
Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with wood and brown paper backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Meandering floral border.
Colours brown, green, copper, gold, black and cream.
Verse reads
'Great God and will thou condescend
To be my Father and my friend
I a poor child and thou so high
The lord of earth and air and sky
Art though my Father the nati?st
When all my days on earth are past
Send down and take me to thy love
To be thy better child above'.

A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including Christ Church National School,
potted flowering plants, a windmill, flowers, a sheep, a house and a lady and a gentleman.
CONDITION: Fair. A number of holes, some of which have been patched from the back.
No stains other than uniform age darkening of the ground.
Stitch losses to the verse, motifs, border and signature.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
