George III, dated 1792. 12ins by 10ins wide. 1792 Sampler by H. Duncombe. Framed in an old 'molded composition over wood' frame with rippled, old glass.

Tacked to wood with card backing.

The sampler is worked in silk and silk-like thread on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye.

Meandering leafy border.

Colours pale green, cream, yellow, pale blue, pink and black.

Verses read

'You, whose fond wishes do to Heaven aspire,

Who make those blest abodes your sole desire;

If you are wise, and hope that Blifs to gain,

Use well your Time, live not an Hour in vain:

Let not the morrow your vain thoughts employ,

But think this Day the last you shall enjoy.'

and

'Remember thy Creator in the Days of thy Youth while the evil Days

come not nor the Years draw nigh when thou shall say

I have no Pleasure in them.'

Signed and dated

'H DUNCOMBE 1792'.

A scattering of motifs, including potted flowering plants,

fir trees,

crowns,

flowers and foliage tied with bows

and hearts.

CONDITION: Generally Good.

A number of holes.

No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground. No stitch losses.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung 'as is'.
