Minton Majolica Sailor tobacco jar, cover & inner weight
Victorian, circa 1868. 9.2ins high, 5.7ins wide, 4.4ins depth. Minton Majolica tobacco jar and cover which features a sailor seated on rope, holding a pipe and drinking from a mug.
Colouration: ochre, cobalt blue, white, are predominant.
The piece bears maker's marks for the Minton pottery.
Bears a pattern number, '716'. Marks include a factory specific date cipher for the year 1868.

Condition
CONDITION: Jar: Good. KILN EFFECTS: shrinkage cracks to the underside base edge.
RESTORATION: two stabilised and retouched hairlines to the rim;
retouched bruise to rim.
Cover: Generally good. KILN EFFECTS: flecks of stray coloured glaze and a touch mark to the rope;
uneven glaze application to sailor's clothing.
RESTORATION: right arm, right foot hat brim reglued and joins retouched;
filled chip to chin;
two stabilised and retouched hairlines to rope and one to pipe.
Weight: Very good. Flake to rim.
