Staffordshire Pearlware 'Poor Maria' spill vase
pre-Victorian, circa 1820. 7.5ins high, 5.5ins wide, 3.9ins depth. Staffordshire pearlware spill vase with a classical theme which features Maria with her dog, seated on an oval base. Multi-coloured version.
Decorated 'in the round' - decoration to front and reverse.
This piece represents Maria, sometimes called Poor Maria, taken from a description in 'A Sentimental Journey Through France', by Lawrence Sterne. Book reference,'English Earthenware Figures 1740-1840' by Pat Halfpenny, page 149, figure 40.
Condition
Generally good.
Two flakes to the spill rim.

KILN EFFECTS: shrinkage crack along the mold join to the dog's back.

RESTORATION: Stabilised and retouched hairline to left wrist.

Reglued flake to dog's brow.

Retouching to the ground and spill.



Old restoration to her right foot.
