Matched Pair Staffordshire Cricketer figures
Victorian, circa 1860. Tallest is 14ins high, 2.3ins wide, 3.5ins depth.
Pair of Staffordshire figures with a sporting theme which feature a batsman and a bowler, stood on an oval base. Multi-coloured version.
Dull gilt base line and embellishment. Flatback, decorated only to the front. Vent hole to reverse of one.
This piece represents famous cricketers. The batsman is thought to represent Julius Caesar, who played for Surrey for many years. The bowler is thought to represent George Parr, who played for Nottinghamshire for many years. Both men were also in the All England Eleven from the 1840s,
with which they went to America, Australia and New Zealand.

CONDITION:Bowler : Good. Minor flaking to little finger on left hand, left sleeve and ground.



Some rubbing to gilt.


KILN EFFECTS: shrinkage crack along the mold join to his neck and left shoulder;

shrinkage line along the mold join of the base to his left,

also to the mold join to right side of his neck and jacket;


shrinkage crack to the underside;

speck of kiln detritus caught in the glaze to his left leg;

small firing pits to front and reverse.




RESTORATION. Retouching to paint loss to the wickets.

Batsman: Generally good. Bruise to reverse of his head.

Two flakes to peak of his cap.

Minor abrasions to the ground.

Slight rubbing to gilt.

KILN EFFECTS: shrinkage line along the mold join to his left side, under his sash;

faint, over glazed shrinkage line to the ground under his bat;

notable crazing;


kiln detritus caught in the glaze to the reverse, and caught inside the piece, causing it to rattle slightly;

staining to the underside and reverse;


RESTORATION. Head reglued and join retouched.


Retouched touchmark to the base.
