1831 Silkwork Church sampler by Sarah Ann Capers

William IV, dated 1831. 16.25ins by 11.5ins wide. 1831 Sampler by Sarah Ann Capers.

Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and rippled, old glass. Fixed to board with wood.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering floral border. Colours dark green, light green, olive green, cream, light brown, dark brown, copper, white, and blue.

Verse reads

'Stand up my Soul shake off thy Fears

And gird the Gospel Armour on

March to the Gates of endlefs Joy

Where thy great Captain Saviours gone'.

Signed and dated 'Sarah Ann Capers her work in the year of our Lord 1831 Aged 11'.

A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a large church with a garden,

a lady and a gentleman carrying a basket of fruit,

lion,

dogs,

birds,

potted flowering plant,

stags,

fir trees,

ducks

and a griffin.

CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of holes and some loss of the backing linen to the extreme edges.

A few small repairs.

A few patchy stains to the right side.

No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.

The silks bright and glossy.Colour run around some of the green threads.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
