1803 Silkwork sampler with Biblical scenes

George III, dated 1803. 13ins by 17.25ins wide. 1803 Silkwork sampler with Biblical scenes.

Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

No border. Colours greens, cream, pale blue, dark brown, copper, silver, black, bronze, grey and gold. Verse reads 'IF Angels sung a Saviour's Birth On that auspicious Morn Then let us imitate their Mirth Now he again is born Himself he humbled to the Grave Made flesh like us to show That we as certainly shall have A Resurrection too.

' Dated '1803'.

Unusual set of motifs, depicting scenes from the Bible, including Eve handing Adam the apple from The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, with a snake in its branches,

and a motif which the stitcher has stitched beside 'The Angel of the lord driving Adam and Eve out of Paradise'

and a potted flowering plant.

The sampler may be unfinished. We think this because of the central area with no stitchwork. CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of holes.

A few patchy stains and uniform age darkening of the ground.

Minor stitch losses to the motifs,

and stitch losses to the verse

and the word 'Paradise'.

Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Stretching is very slightly uneven.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
