George III, dated 1801. 17ins by 12ins wide. 1801 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Phillipson. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering floral border.

Colours yellow, cream, pink, magenta, blues, brown and greens. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-25. Verses read, 'scarce an ill to human life belongs. But what our follies cause, or mutual wrongs, or if some stripes from provi- dence we feel, He strikes with pity and but wounds to heal.'

and 'Health is a rich and heavenly gift. Descending from on high What empty titles cannot gain. Nor sordid riches buy Health is the parent of content. Composer of our strife. Adds sweeteners to our joys below. Without it what is life.'.

Signed and dated 'Mary Phillipson October 16th 1801'.

A few motifs including potted flowering plants, fruit baskets, squirrels, sheep, stag and butterflies.

CONDITION: Generally Good. A few holes.

A few pale patchy stains, barely visible.

No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
