Pair Majolica Palissy monkey candlestick holders

Circa 1890. 9.4ins high, 4.3ins wide, 4.3ins depth. Augusto Baptista de Carvalho Portuguese Palissy Majolica candlestick holder which features a monkey climbing a tree.



Colouration: grey, brown, green are predominant.











The piece bears maker's marks for the Augusto Baptista de Carvalho pottery.

Condition

Right facing: Good.

Some small flakes to roots.





KILN EFFECTS: kiln grit caught in the glaze;





shrinkage cracks to the inside of the holder;



shrinkage line to the monkey's right hind ankle.



RESTORATION. Retouching to flakes to rim of base.







Left facing: Good. No restoration.

Two small flakes to the roots.





KILN EFFECTS: glaze accumulation to the monkey's elbow;



shrinkage cracks to the inside of holder;



kiln detritus caught in the glaze.
