Antique Sampler, 1733, by Mary Godfrey Aged 6

George II, dated 1733. 9.3ins high, 8.3ins wide, 1.3ins deep. Georgian Sampler, stitched in 1733 by Mary Godfrey.

The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch.

Colours green, red, light brown, gold, pink and blue. Numbers 1-9 stitched forwards and backwards at the bottom.

Signed and dated, 'MARY GODFREY AGED 6 YEARS MAY 21 1733'.

Motifs including a wonderful and quirky Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk.

Also rabbits, dragonflies,

a tree, a figure

and birds.

Framed in a modern wood frame with glass.

Mounting: The sampler is fixed to board. Frame backed with chipboard and sealed with tape.

CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of holes, which have been backed with linen.

No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
