George III, dated 1783. 14.8ins high, 12.6ins wide, 0.6ins deep. Georgian Sampler, 1783, by Eliz Taylor Aged 9.

The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours green, blue, red, dark brown, copper, silver and gold.

Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-14.

Verse reads, 'By Doubts and Questions Knowledge is attaind. Who nothing doubted nothing ever gain. Who ask no Questions and makes no demand, Will never learn nor never understand.'.

Signed and dated 'Eliz Taylor her Work Aged 9 Years 1783'.

A good set of motifs, including angels,

a house with a garden,

birds, potted flowering plants,

fir trees, trees, stags

and butterflies.

Framed in a modern wood frame with glass.

Mounting: The sampler is stitched to board. Frame backed with chipboard and sealed with tape.

CONDITION: Good. A number of small holes.

No stains. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading.

The silks bright and glossy.

Slight colour run to right hand tree.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
