Georgian Sampler with Sheep in a Field

Early 19thC, circa 1820. 18ins high, 12.2ins wide, 0.9ins deep. Georgian Sampler with Sheep in a Field.

The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch.

Meandering floral border.

Colours green, light brown, dark brown, gold, silver, black, blue and pink.

Verse reads, 'How cheeful along the gay Mead, The Daisy and Cowslip appear! The Flocks, as they carelessly feed, Rejoice in the spring of the Year.'.

No signature or date.

A wonderful set of motifs, including a country scene with sheep in a field.

A farmhouse behind a fence, with pigs,

a water well, a water trough, a tree and a barn.

Also, a basket of flowers,

a fruit basket,

potted flowering plants and butterflies.

Framed in a modern, gilt over wood, frame with glass.

Mounting: The sampler is mounted onto board. Frame backed with cardboard.

CONDITION: Good. A few small holes.

Very slight stain on middle right.

No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong.

No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
