Antique Sampler, 1824, by Eliza Shawyers

George IV, dated 1824. 15.7ins high, 12ins wide, 1ins deep. Regency Sampler, stitched in 1824, by Eliza Shawyers.

The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch.

Meandering floral border.

Colours green, blue, light brown, dark brown, gold, silver and black.

Verse entitled 'a Verse' reads, 'Here while the needle plies the mimic art, The Muse would preach a lecture to the heart. Would tell the maid whose fair ingenious hand, On canvas bids gay Florays tribes expand, that youths inviting blossoms soon may fade, And beautys roses droop in deaths drear shade. But virtue will the tyrants power defy, Her flowers immortal neither fade nor die. Revolving time can never their bloom impair, Which through eternal years shall flourish fair.'.

Signed and dated 'Eliza Shawyers Work Finished December 23 1824 In the Ninth Year of her Age.'.

A good set of motifs, including a wonderful house with a garden.

In the garden are a lady and gentleman, with trees, a dog and deer.

Also birds,

flowers,

flowering trees and potted flowering plants.

Framed in an old, burr maple frame with rippled, old glass.

Mounting: The sampler is fixed to board. Frame backed with paper and sealed with tape.

CONDITION: Good. A couple of small holes.

Slight patchy stains in bottom corner and on bottom edge.

No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame with chipped veneer on top right and top left corners

and showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
