
George IV, dated 183c. 19.7ins high, 16.5ins wide, 1ins deep. Regency period Sampler, circa 1830, by Mary Ann Smith.
The sampler is worked in silk a on linen ground, in cross stitch.
Meandering floral border.
Colours red, blue, light brown, gold, pink, green and silver.
Verse reads, 'The loss of time is much, The loss of health is more, The loss of christ is such, No mortal can restore'.
Signed and dated 'Mary Ann Smith Aged 13 183 c'. (Last digit of the date absent.)
A wonderful set of motifs, including a country scene along the top. There is a hill, with a flock of sheep,
a lady in Highland tartan dress walking a dog on one side
and a country cottage on the other.
Other motifs include birds, potted flowering plants, fruit baskets and flowers.
Framed in an old, burr maple frame with rippled, dimpled, old glass.
Mounting: The sampler is stitched to calico slip over mountboard card. Frame backed with card and sealed with tape.
CONDITION: Good. A few small holes, which are backed to blend in.
No stains.
Slight stich loss to some of the text.
Colours are all good and strong.
No colour run.
Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
