The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border.
Colours green, gold, copper and brown.
Inscription reads,'THE FEAR OF THE LORD IS THE BEGINNING OF WISDOM AND TO DEPART FROM EVIL IS UNDERSTANDING'.
Signed and dated 'MARGARET CHRISTIE. PERTH 1812'. Perth is a town in central Scotland.
A few initials - 'WC MM', 'WC IS'.
A good set of motifs, including a 'forest' of fir trees,
birds,
potted flowering plants,
crowns,
a fruit tree and stags.
Framed in an old, possibly original, Hogarth frame with rippled, old glass.
Mounting: The sampler is fixed to card. Frame backed with wood and sealed with tape.
CONDITION: Good. One hole.
Slight wear to ground in places.
No stains. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven. Frame showing some wear, otherwise sound.
