
William IV, dated 1834. 14.6ins high, 12.4ins wide, 0.6ins deep. 1834 Sampler by Martha Young Aged 9.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Meandering strawberry border.
Colours green, light brown, dark brown, black and silver.
Verse reads, 'Jesus permit thy gracious Name to stand, As the first effort of an infant's hand; And while her fingers o'er this canvas move, Engage her tender heart to seek thy love, with thy dear children let her share a part And write thy Name thyself upon her heart.'. Signed and dated 'Martha Young Aged 9 Years 1834'.
A good set of motifs, including figures,
fruit trees,
dogs, potted flowering plants,
a fruit basket, crowns, hearts, an owl, birds
and a squirrel.
Framed in an old wood frame with glass.
Mounting: The sampler is loose board. Frame backed with brown paper and sealed with tape.
CONDITION: Good. One hole.
Very slight patchy staining in places on the border.
No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
