Antique Scottish Sampler, 1840, by Mary & Christian

Victorian, dated 1840. 15.7ins high, 12.6ins wide, 1.2ins deep. Antique Scottish Sampler, 1840, by Mary & Christian ???loway.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours red, light brown, dark brown, silver, black, green and gold.

Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case, numbers 1-14, and family initials.

Inscription reads, 'Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of Life, I have done this to Let you see What care my parents took of me.' And, 'Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for Brethren to dwell together in unity.'.

Signed and dated 'Mary, and Christian ???loway. Green Side School. 2nd November 1840'.

A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a house with a garden,

dogs, birds, rabbits,

fruit baskets, crowns, potted flowering plants and fir trees.

Framed in an old, possibly original, rosewood frame with glass.

Mounting: The sampler is stitched to linen. Frame backed with chipboard and sealed with tape.

This sampler is unusual in that it appears to have been stitched by two siblings, working on it together.

 

CONDITION: Good. A few small holes.

The surname on the signature is hard to make out, but is probably Galloway or Calloway.

A few stains.

No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
