Antique Band Sampler, 1741, by Elizabeth Buckingam

George II, dated 1741. 17ins high by 8ins wide. 1741 Band Sampler by Elizabeth Buckingam.

The sampler is worked in silk and linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye.

Decorated border and divider lines in various patterns.

Colours gold, green, light brown, dark brown, purple, copper and blues. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-30.

Verses read, 'AWAKE MY SOVL AND WITH THE> SUN THY DAILY STAGE OF DUTY R>VN SHAKE OF DUL SLOTH AND JOY>FUL RISE TO PAY THY MORNING SA>CRAFICES'. 'Teach me O Lord that way of life> thy statutes Recommend Never>from thence will decline But>keep it to the end'. And, 'ELIZABETH BVCKINGAM IS MY>NAME AND WITH MY NEEDLE I ROVGHT THE SAME AND IF I COULD>HAVE DONE IT BETTER I WOVLD>HAVE MENDED EVERY LETTER'.

Signed and dated 'ELIZABETH BVCKINGAM THE DAVGHTER OF SARAH BVCKINGAM MADE THIS IN THE 10 YEAR OF HER AGE JULY 6 1741'.

Unusual set of motifs, including flowers, crowns, bird, a shield and diamonds.

Framed in an old wood frame with glass.

Mounting: The sampler is stitched to linen and stretched over acid free board. Frame backed with card and sealed with tape.

CONDITION: Good. One tiny hole and a pull to the ground.

A few, light patchy stains.

Minor stitch losses. Colours are bright with little fading. Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
