
George III, dated 1814. 12.6ins high, 8.3ins wide, 1ins deep 1814 Ackworth School Sampler, by Deborah Smith.
The sampler is worked in black silk thread on a linen ground. Simple line border.
Verse entitled 'On PROVIDENCE' reads, 'God works in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform: He plants his footsteps on the sea, And rides upon the storm. Deep in unfathomable mines, Of never failing skill, He treasures up his bright designs, And works his sovereign will. Ye feeble saints fresh courage take: The clouds ye so much dread, Are big with mercy and shall break, In blessings on your head'.
Signed and dated 'Deborah Smith Ackworth 1814'. Ackworth is a well known Quaker School near Pontefract, West Yorkshire, in England.
Framed in an old, possibly original, black, ebonised wood frame with uv protected glass. Mounting: The sampler is stitched over acid free card. Frame backed with wood and brown paper.
CONDITION: Good. One repaired hole.
Slight patchy staining.
No stitch losses. Thread colour is good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched, though the mounting stitching is visible along the top border. Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
