
Victorian, dated 1879. 14.6ins high, 13.6ins wide, 0.6ins deep 1879 Bristol Orphanage Sampler by M Mountain.
The sampler is worked in red thread on linen ground. Multiple alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case, in a variety of fonts. Numbers 0-9 and roman numerals.

Signed and dated 'M Mountain No.5 Orphan House Ashley Down Bristol 1879. Bristol is a City in England. The Bristol Orphan Houses at Ashley Down, also known as the Müller Orphanage, became the largest children's home in the UK, homing more than 2000 children. Sampler's originating from here are highly collected and sought after.
Motifs include geometric patterns, the Holy Bible, potted flowering plants and various scrolls.
Framed in an old hogarth frame with glass. Mounted to card, secured at the back with tape. Chipboard backing to the reverse with an old framer's label, dated December 1st 1955.
CONDITION: Very Good. No holes. Two small, very pale stains amongst the alphabets.
One very pale stain in the bottom right hand corner.
No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
