The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Meandering floral border.
Colours green, cream, yellow, browns and black.
Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-24
Verse reads,
'The loss of friends is great
The loss of love…is more
The loss of christ is such
A…loss as no man can restore'.
Signed and dated,
'1840 Esther Nunn aged 13 years'.
A good set of motifs, including a house with a garden,
dogs,
birds,
angels,
flowers, potted flowering plants,
stags,
fruit baskets,
crowns,
hearts,
squirrels,
diamonds and unusually, kettles.
Framed in an old, gilded, gesso frame with glass.
Mounting: The sampler is tacked to a wooden board. Frame backed with card.
CONDITION: Good.
A few holes,
one which has an old repair.
No stains.
Very minor stitch loss to one of the squirrel motifs.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.
No colour run.
Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
