Pair Staffordshire Pearlware Antony & Cleopatra Figures

pre-Victorian, circa 1820. Tallest is 9.1ins high, 13ins wide, 4.3ins depth. Pair of Staffordshire Pottery pearlware figures with a theatrical and literary theme which feature Mark Antony and Cleopatra, recumbent on a shaped base.

Multi-coloured version. Decorated 'in the round' - decoration to front and reverse.

Open bottomed.

This piece represents characters from the play, 'Antony and Cleopatra' by William Shakespeare. It is based on real events of ancient times, a tragedy and also a story of passionate love. It tells the story of an affair between Mark Antony, one of the three who rule Rome after the assassination of Julius Caesar, and Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt.

Maker's marks painted to the underside (14 to Antony, 28 to Cleopatra).

 

Condition

CONDITION: Antony: Good. No restoration. Minor abrasions to nose, feet and right elbow.

A few paint losses to clothing and lustre tunic.

Cleopatra: Good. No restoration. Two small flakes, one to hem of dress and one to right foot.

A few paint losses to the ground and clothing.
